SUPPORT LETTER FROM THE COLOMBIAN MENNONITE CHURCH FOR HECTOR MONDRAGON

The Colombian Mennonite Church has for more than 60 years offered a testimony of nonviolent service to this country in search of peace and well-being for Colombia. At the global level, for nearly 500 years the Mennonite Church has been teaching and practicing nonviolence and opposition to every type of war, recruitment by armed groups, and violence of every kind.

This brief history intends to show that this is the teaching that is given to our members and to anyone who is willing to listen, and this is the commitment that our members assume.

Héctor H. Mondragón has been a member of our church since 1994, that is, 14 years. We have known him as a Christian not only committed to the cause of Jesus Christ, but also to Jesus' teaching and example of nonviolent love. As a person dedicated full time, both as an investigator and advisor, to the cause of the poor, in particular the indigenous and peasants of our country, brother Mondragón has worked with the support of the church in favor of justice for these groups of people, particularly in relation to land tenure. But, always from the perspective of nonviolence. His positions towards the government as well as toward the insurgent groups have been clear.

Because of this, we are very concerned about the attempt to link him, through the Raul Reyes computer, to alias Sara and to the FARC through a national newspaper article. The timing of this development seems to us particularly clumsy as it comes just before a planned speaking tour in the United States to explain the implications of and concerns for the great majority of Colombians of the proposed free trade agreement with that country. Brother Mondragón was not able to travel on his tour. On the other hand, Colombians interested in seeing the FTA approved were able to make their visit to the United States this month. This fact makes us feel that there is an evident lack of fair play in the democratic debate surrounding this issue.

The Colombian Mennonite Church rejects any attempt to link one of its members - and in this particular case Héctor H. Mondragón - to any armed group or any violent practice or to slander his/her name, which as we all know, is also extremely dangerous for the life and security of any person in this context.

We desire with this letter to underline our support for brother Mondragón and to offer peace of mind to anyone or any group who might have been confused by such news. At the same time, we ask for support both at the national and international level to defend his good name and to ensure his safety.

We do not doubt that the truth will ultimately triumph and the cause of God's justice for the poor of the earth as well. Also, we believe that God will vindicate the righteous, and we invoke the words of Jesus: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled and Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God, and Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

We also call on those who hold to positions different from ours, those who continue to use weapons to achieve their ends, including the governing class of our country, to reflection, repentance and change. Because we believe in the possibility of conversion and new directions we invite you to set your sights on opening pathways to peace and well-being for Colombia,

CARTA DE APOYO DE LA IMCOL A HECTOR MONDRAGON

La Iglesia Cristiana Menonita de Colombia tiene más de 60 años de testimonio noviolento de servicio al país en procura de la paz y bienestar de Colombia. A nivel mundial la Iglesia Menonita lleva cerca de 500 años enseñando y practicando la noviolencia y la oposición a todo tipo de guerra, reclutamiento de grupos armados y violencia de todo tipo.

El breve recuento anterior significa que es esa la enseñanza que se le da a los miembros y a cualquiera que se presta para escuchar, y es el compromiso que asume nuestra membresía.

Hector H. Mondragón ha sido miembro de nuestra iglesia desde 1994, es decir hace 14 años. Lo hemos conocido como un cristiano no sólo comprometido con la causa de Jesucristo sino también con la enseñanza y ejemplo de Jesús de amor noviolento. Como persona dedicada de tiempo completo, como investigador y asesor, a la causa de los pobres, en especial de los indígenas y campesinos de nuestro país, el hermano Mondragón ha trabajado con el respaldo de la iglesia a favor de justicia para estos grupos particularmente en relación a tenencia de tierras. Pero siempre desde la perspectiva de la noviolencia. Sus posiciones han sido claras de cara al gobierno como de cara a los grupos insurgentes.

Por lo anterior nos preocupa el intento de vincularlo con el computador de Raul Reyes, a la mujer conocida con alias Sara y a las FARC por la prensa. Se nos hace especialmente burda la selección del momento de sacar su nombre en este contexto, justo antes de una planeada gira en los EEUU para explicar los alcances y los perjuicios del TLC para los intereses de la gran mayoría de colombianos. La gira del hermano Mondragón no se pudo realizar. En cambio la visita a los EEUU de los colombianos interesados en que el TLC sea aprobado sí se hizo. Este hecho nos hace sentir que hay una evidente falta de juego limpio en el debate democrático alrededor de este asunto.

Queremos señalar que la Iglesia Cristiana Menonita de Colombia rechaza cualquier intento de vincular a uno de nuestros miembros - y en particular en este instante a Hector H. Mondragón - a cualquier grupo armado, a cualquier práctica violenta y a los intentos de enlodar su nombre, cosa que como todos sabemos, también es supremamente peligroso para la vida y seguridad de cualquier persona en esa situación.

Esperamos con ésta sentar una posición de apoyo al hermano Mondragón para la tranquilidad de todas las personas y grupos que pueden haber sido confundidos con semejante noticia. Al mismo tiempo pedimos el apoyo de ellos tanto a nivel nacional como internacional para defender el buen nombre y velar por la seguridad de él.

No dudamos que la verdad en últimas triunfará, y la causa de la justicia de Dios para los pobres de la tierra también. También creemos que Dios vindica a las personas justas y nos acogemos a las palabras de Jesús: Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque ellos serán saciados y Bienaventurados los que trabajan por la paz, porque Dios los llamará hijos suyos y Bienaventurados los perseguidos por hacer lo que es justo, porque de ellos es el reino de los cielos y Bienaventurados ustedes cuando por causa mía los ataquen con toda clase de mentiras.

Llamamos también a nuestros contradictores, a todos los que siguen usando las armas para lograr sus fines incluyendo a la clase gobernante de nuestro país a la reflexión, al arrepentimiento y al cambio, con miras a abrir caminos de paz y bienestar para Colombia, porque creemos en la posibilidad de la conversión y en nuevos rumbos.
