Washington group urges ‘State of Our Values Watch’

A group in the nation’s capital wants to organize “State of Our Values Watch” groups across America to watch and react to President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address.

Sojourners, the magazine founded and edited by Jim Wallis, hopes to organize more than 1,000 such groups to give a faith-based response to the vision the president sets forth in his sixth State of the Union address.

The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in the Squirrel Hill section of Pittsburgh will host one. No group has offered yet to host one in West Virginia. Host places needn’t be churches.

“People of faith will come together, listen to the president’s speech, and reflect with each other on his words and the actions behind those words,” the group declares on its Web site. “The goal is to provide a bold and rapid response to the president’s speech that represents the biblical call to social justice and peacemaking.

Another goal is that the media will spotlight people of faith reacting to the president’s speech and that some of those reactions will make the 11 p.m. televised news, the Web site said.

In last year’s State of the Union speech, President Bush proclaimed that “Over the next several months, on issue after issue, let us do what Americans have always done, and build a better world for our children and grandchildren.”

“Did the actions behind his words line up with your values?” the Web site asked, then requested that people examine the president’s priorities when it comes to reducing poverty, allocating the budget, making peace at home and abroad, and committing to honest government.

Sojourners wants people to consider the president’s speech in terms of how he approaches issues of poverty, funding, peace in neighborhoods and abroad, and restoring honest government.

“As people of faith who believe in justice and compassion, we must ensure that our moral values are represented and our prophetic voices are heard,” Sojourners said on its Web site, www.sojo.net.
