PM’s message on Holocaust Memorial Day
by Gordon Brown
Prime Minister of United Kingdom 1-27-2010
One of my favourite quotes is from the pastor Jim Wallis - that hope is not a feeling, but a decision. And so today we have a decision to make. We can choose to commemorate the holocaust by looking back only on the unspeakable terror and toll. Or we can be lifted and sustained by the memories of the people who retained the ability to be human, even in the most inhuman places, the camp inmates who continued to toast ‘l’chiam’ - to life - right there in the factories of death. »read more

Supreme Court has changed the rules of democracy
by Maryann Tobin
Examiner.com 1-22-2010
Author Jim Wallis said, “Yesterday's Supreme Court ruling on campaign finance law will give a huge boost to the special interests that already exercise a stranglehold on our political system, allowing them to tighten their grip and further prevent any meaningful change. Dismissing the practice of the last century and overturning two major precedents, the Court ruled 5-4 that corporations have the same First Amendment rights as persons, and that those rights include spending corporate funds to influence elections.” »read more

Groups React to Supreme Court Decision on Campaign Finance
by Ted Olsen
Christianity Today blog 1-22-2010
Sojourners founder Jim Wallis, the ruling "will give a huge boost to the special interests that already exercise a stranglehold on our political system, allowing them to tighten their grip and further prevent any meaningful change. … At a time when financial reform is at the forefront of people's concerns, giving big banks and corporations a green light to even further influence our political process is an outrage and an assault to democracy." »read more

He's No Ted Kennedy
by Tobin Grant
Christianity Today blog 1-22-2010
Jim Wallis, president of Sojourners, appeared on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart this week. Stewart appears on the latest cover of Sojourners magazine, and is discussed at length in Wallis's new book. Wallis explained that Stewart "asked questions nobody else was asking—at least not on television. How did we move from wealth resulting from real work to wealth coming from the 'game' of the casino gamblers of Wall Street?" »read more

Jim Wallis, American prophet
by Eboo Patel
On Faith 1-22-2010
In my work as Executive Director of Interfaith Youth Core, I get to be on stage with a lot of experts. I don't get to be on stage with that many heroes. Last night was different - I had the privilege of interviewing Rev. Jim Wallis, founder of Sojourners, for an event at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. »read more

Conan O'Brien for Treasury Secretary
by Leslie Savan
The Nation (NY) blog 1-21-2010
So, what Obama needs is a little bit of Conan's anarchic elan. If the banks--who, as Sen. Dick Durbin said of the Congress, "own the place"--won't let him spend money to reform healthcare, he should use his majority to rewrite the tax laws (tax rate changes require only 50 Senate votes and the Vice President's) to take Wall Street's bonus money back. After all, as Rediscovering Values author Jim Wallis said on Jon Stewart last night, the $150 billion that just six banks paid out as bonuses in 2009 could eliminate or postpone all home foreclosures through 2012, or erase the budget gaps in all 50 states. At the least, it could help rebuild Haiti. »read more

In the wake of the global financial crisis, the inevitable question arises as to whether the rules and values that were in place to safeguard the capitalist system have failed or whether the system itself is in need of an overhaul. In addition to considering regulatory changes, many commentators have called for a serious reflection on the morals and ethics underpinning the system and, in particular, the concept of the common good. Join The Chicago Council on Global Affairs for a discussion on how the economic crisis has presented us with an opportunity to revisit and reevaluate our core values as citizens of a global community. »read more

Tavis: Good to have you here. When I first saw the book, "Rediscovering Values," my first thought was, is it too late? Wallis: Well, I think the country is ready for a conversation about values. These town meetings began in my home town of Detroit (unintelligible) and the meeting may not be ready but the country is, because underneath this economic crisis there's a values crisis. So we won't get to an economic recovery without a moral recovery too. »read more

Faith-Based Funding for Teen Challenge Stirs Debate
by Ethan Cole
The Christian Post 1-19-2010
Reprints for 01-20-2010: Dakota Voice.
In September, progressive evangelical leader Jim Wallis, who is a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships, contended that there is a need for faith-based charities to “preserve” their religious identity. “[S]ervice provision is not the same thing as hiring,” Wallis stated in a blog found on the ministry Sojourners’ web site. “To do what they do, faith organizations must maintain their identity.” »read more

The effort has been backed by Richard Viguerie, a fundraiser and activist considered the father of the modern conservative movement. Viguerie, in a July 2009 essay in Sojourners magazine, wrote that executions are supposed to take the life of the guilty -- but noted there are enough flaws in the system to fear an innocent person has been put to death. »read more

Wall Street and Values
by Bob Abernethy
Religion and Ethics Newsweekly 1-15-2010
BOB ABERNETHY, host: As public outrage continues over Wall Street’s plans to pay multimillion-dollar bonuses to its top executives and traders, President Obama called such bonuses “obscene” and proposed a new tax on the country’s largest banks. Meanwhile, the heads of the four largest investment banks were the first witnesses before a bipartisan commission investigating the causes of last year’s financial crisis. A new book out this week called “Rediscovering Values” urges moral as well as economic reforms. Its author is Rev. Jim Wallace of Sojourners magazine. Jim, welcome. As you look back at the causes of the so-called Great Recession, what are the most important ones that you see? »read more
