Could NAE's Pro-Immigration Reform Stance Open Door to Bipartisanship?
by Michelle A. Vu
The Christian Post 10-24-2009
Still, progressive evangelical leader Jim Wallis and other religious leaders associated with the Left praised the NAE for its support of immigration reform. “You know the wind has shifted in Congress when moderate and conservative evangelical leaders testify before the U.S. Senate in support of an earned pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants,” wrote Wallis, who is not a member of the more theologically conservative NAE, in a Huffington Post column Wednesday. The head of the anti-poverty ministry Sojourners went on to compliment the evangelical body for setting a model for all Christians to take “seriously the call of scripture and act prophetically” when it comes to moral issues. »read more

America’s Uncontrolled Debt and Spending is the Real ‘Waterloo’
by Ray Nothstine
Catholic Exchange 10-24-2009
Religious left icon Jim Wallis has popularized the maxim, “budgets are moral documents.” Yet the often repeated declaration is true in a way Wallis hasn’t envisioned, signaling bad news for Washington’s big spenders and those stuck footing the bill. Currently this country is facing no greater crisis than out of control spending and a mounting federal debt—a moral problem of prodigious proportions. »read more

En las últimas décadas la población latina ha aumentado drásticamente en los Estados Unidos. No cabe duda que la falta de oportunidades de trabajo, educación, seguridad y la inestabilidad económica de Latinoamérica fueron los precursores a este repentino crecimiento. »read more

The Justice Revival, a free event scheduled for Nov. 10-12 at Dallas Market Hall, is an ecumenical effort that seeks to unite Christians across social, economic, and denominational lines to improve public education and to support permanent housing for some of the nearly 6,000 homeless in Dallas. »read more

Revival! Sojourners event targets justice issues
by Robin Russell
The United Methodist Reporter 10-16-2009
The Rev. Jim Wallis, founder and president of Sojourners, said Dallas clergy are coming together for two reasons: to help the chronically homeless and to improve public education. In Dallas, for instance, there are more than 6,000 homeless persons on the streets, and 90 percent of high school students in the Dallas Independent School District are not college ready. »read more

Peace, Peace—But Is There Peace?
by Tobin Grant
Christianity Today 10-16-2009
Sojourners supported giving Obama the Nobel Prize in several posts. Valerie Elverton Dixon wrote that while little has been accomplished so far, Obama has a vision for peace. She wrote that the Nobel committee recognized this vision and "has given him a just peace prize." Edward Gilbreath viewed the prize as "a salute to America's ability to finally rise up to the ideals of equality, freedom, and strength through diversity that it was founded on." Jim Wallis interpreted the prize as a "prayer." He wrote that he wanted it to "be a prayer for the U.S. itself, to lead in a new way and to seek a fundamentally different approach to the many global decisions that this new president will now have to make." »read more

Measure B benefits business
by David M. Gilmour
Marin Independent Journal 10-16-2009
Jim Wallis, head of Sojourners, spoke to a gathering in Marin recently and made this statement, "What is getting cheaper all the time? Screens, TVs, monitors, and cell phones with all their applications. What is getting more expensive all the time? Education." Who is shaping the values and who is teaching our children? What is more important in society than the education of children? »read more

GOP cracking its right-wing
by David Paul Brown
Paradise Post 10-15-2009
Also, the Christian magazine Sojourners is running an e-mail campaign to tell FOX, Rush Limbaugh and many his clones to stop the lies and vitriol. I'd ignore this pablum if was "just entertainment" as the apologists say. I'm sorry, I'd like to believe that. I tried to believe that. But when I hear people repeating this stuff around town in retail shops, I'm afraid the lies are working. This doesn't produce an informed electorate. »read more

Bloggers of all stripes grab a piece of the climate pie for Blog Action Day 2009
by Ashley Braun
Grist 10-15-2009
Sojourners: This blog on faith, politics, and culture has deep social-justice roots, so it makes sense that a look at climate inequality in the Senate climate bill would spring from their pages today. They also want you to pray for Glenn Beck so that he’ll get behind health-care reform. All in a day’s work. »read more

Working to make religion part of the solution
by Phil Haslanger
The Capital Times (Madison) 10-15-2009
Rev. Jim Wallis remembers when he was organizing a protest in the rotunda of the nation's Capitol a few years ago. Leaders from a variety of Christian denominations were planning to be there - traditional Protestants, more conservative evangelicals, Catholics involved with social justice. Then Wallis, editor of Sojourners magazine and a leading religious voice on issues like ending poverty and wars, got a call from Rabbi Michael Lerner, editor of Tikkun magazine and a strong Jewish voice on those same issues. »read more

What is God's place in government?
by Cal Thomas and Bon Beckel
USA Today Blog 10-15-2009
Jim Wallis, the liberal activist at Sojourners, would probably argue that we should simply help the poor, without the caveat of helping them "help themselves," as you pointed out. I'm just saying! But my larger point is that our faith comes from attraction and not from imposition. I have a great suspicion about people who claim to have faith when that faith seems to serve their secular purposes. »read more

The President's Faith Council Meets
by Eboo Patel
On Faith 10-14-2009
There were voices on both sides, some saying that we shouldn't lift up one or two conflicts, others saying that one conflict or another should have particular resonance for the Council. Jim Wallis offered a way forward: religion is part of the problem in too many conflicts; this Faith Council believes religion needs to be part of the solution, and wants to offer its expertise and understanding to that end. »read more

Point Person: Our Q&A with Jim Wallis
by William McKenzie
The Dallas Morning News 10-09-2009
Reprints for 10-09-2009: Denton Record Chronicle. WFAA Dallas ABC.
I got excited about Justice Revival after reading more about the social movements led by William Wilberforce and other religious leaders and how they shaped their times. Social movements are a way to engage the issues of justice without engaging in partisan politics. And they have not succeeded without the support of religious folk. Charles Finney used altar calls to sign people up for the anti-slavery campaign. »read more
