  • Sue Bailey Thurman, 93, died on Christmas day 1996 in San Francisco. A one-time adviser to Gandhi, Sue Bailey Thurman and her late husband, theologian Howard Thurman, helped found the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples, the first interracial, non-denominational church in the United States. She was also the founding editor of AfroAmerican WomenÆs Journal.
  • Evangelist Billy Graham offered the invocation at President Clinton's inauguration, participating in inaugural activities for the eighth time in the past four decades. "Such historic occasions provide opportunity to reflect on the need for renewal across our land, which can only come from God," the evangelist said.
  • According to "Harper's Index," 12 percent of Americans believe that Joan of Arc is married to Noah.
