While reporting in Peru three years ago, American journalist Lori Berenson was convicted of treason and imprisoned after a trial by a hooded judge in a military tribunal. Earlier this year, the U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights found that Peru had violated international law in Berenson’s case. Letters to President Clinton and Secretary of State Madeleine Albright have been circulating the House and Senate for signatures.

For 11 years, Multinational Monitor has compiled a list of the worst companies of the year. Topping the 1998 list were Chevron, Coca-Cola, General Motors, Loral, Mobil, Monsanto, Royal Caribbean, Unocal, Wal-Mart, and Warner-Lambert. Coca-Cola was cited for pushing “liquid candy” on children over healthier drinks, Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd. for polluting the oceans, and Wal-Mart for its use of Asian child labor and other non-union low-wage workers in undercutting small inner-city shops.

The Interfaith Pilgrimage of the Middle Passage reached its final destination of Cape Town, South Africa, in June. As the more than 100 people marched across the United States and Africa, they shared with people along the way about the evils of slavery and racism. The Middle Passage was a route frequently used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Rev.Greg Dell of Broadway United Methodist Church in Chicago was convicted of breaking church law when he performed a Holy Union service for a same-gender couple. He will be suspended Julyá5 unless he agrees to follow the prohibition on same-sex unions or the law is changed.
