Remembering Mitch

The ashes of Mitch Snyder, a renowned activist for homeless people, were laid to rest in a June ceremony in Washington, D.C. Carol Fennelly, at left, longtime friend and co-worker of Snyder’s, poured out his ashes in a garden plot for the homeless on the grounds of Washington, D.C.’s Luther Place Memorial Church.

Snyder, who died in 1990, is best known for his work with the Community for Creative Non-Violence, which successfully pressured then-President Ronald Reagan to turn an abandoned building in downtown D.C. into a facility for the homeless. Fennelly, who will soon move to Youngstown, Ohio, to establish a ministry for prisoners there, said that Snyder "doesn’t belong to me or in Youngstown, but to Washington and should stay here."
