  • Shout Out. Christian Palestinian leader Dr. Hanan Ashrawi was awarded the Sydney (Australia) 2003 Peace Prize for her commitment to human rights, justice, and the Middle East peace process.
  • China Pattern. The Chinese government, prompted by recent statistics showing that 117 boys are born for every 100 girls, says it plans to prevent female fetus abortions, promote gender equality, and improve quality of life for girls.
  • Duly Noted. Michael Moore’s new book Dude, Where’s My Country? is dedicated to peace activist Rachel Corrie (at right), who was killed by an Israeli Defense Force bulldozer in March 2003.

  • Clean Up. By 2005, the entire continent of Africa will be using lead-free gasoline. The United States, Western Europe, most of Latin America, the Caribbean, and many parts of Asia are already lead-free.

  • Melts in Your Mouth? British chocolate giant Cadbury Schweppes will begin using biodegradable candy trays that dissolve in water. It "dissolves upon contact with water to reduce significantly the environmental impacts of the packaging," said the developer. Please, don’t eat the trays.
