The Common Good

Starr report - Tavis Smiley

Date: October 5, 2011

Tavis Smiley will use both his TV and radio platforms to address the nation's economic crisis in "The Poverty Tour: A Call to Conscience," a weeklong series. It kicks off on the radio side this Friday night at 9 with a roundtable discussion on Smiley's PRI radio show, which airs here on WNYC (820 AM).

The series then continues next Monday through Friday on Smiley's PBS showcase, "The Tavis Smiley Show" (midnight/Ch. 13). Each night of the weeklong TV series will feature video highlights from Smiley's nationwide poverty bus tour, which he undertook in August (18 cities in nine states), with his "Smiley & West" co-host, Dr. Cornel West.

Following the video highlights each night, Smiley will speak with poverty advocates including Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and best-selling author Jim Wallis.
