In late 2006, more than a year after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the Gulf Coast, I traveled to New Orleans with a church-sponsored work team. We were shocked at the amount of devastation still evident, and inspired by the resiliance of the people we met, even as we helped to gut the homes that contained their few remaining possessions.

The laments and praises of gospel music recorded in a previous trip to the Gulf Coast provide the soundtrack to these photo essays of survival and the hope found in faith and solidarity.
