The War in Iraq: A Sojourners Timeline

  • August 15, 2002 – Sojourners announces “A World at Odds: Conscience in a Time of Terror,” an online study guide that offers fresh, alternative perspectives on five timely and important issues.
  • November 10, 2002 – Publish Sojourners-initiated anti-war statement with 60 leaders from US and UK calling war "illegal, unwise, and immoral."
  • Jan. 20, 2003 – Sojourners hosts MLK Day prayer service against the war entitled “Pray and Act for Peace and Justice.”
  • Feb 18, 2003 – Jim Wallis leads delegation of religious leaders to meet with British Prime Minister Tony Blair
  • Feb 24-28, 2003 - Sojourners organizes National Teach-In on the war on Iraq, February 24-28
  • March 2003 – Sojourners releases a six-point plan for avoiding war with Iraq entitled “An Alternative to War for Defeating Saddam Hussein, A Religious Initiative.”
  • March 16, 2003 –Win Without War coalition Global Candlelight Vigil, planned and promoted with the help of Sojourners.
  • March 18, 2003 – “Final Appeal” print ad in UK
  • March 26, 2003 – Nobel Laureate Protest of Iraq war – Sojourners staffers Rose Berger and Cindy Martens arrested
  • September 9, 2004 – Second Win Without War coalition Global Candlelight Vigil to mark 1,000+ dead in Iraq, planned and promoted with the help of Sojourners.
  • October 2004 – “Confessing Christ in a World of Violence” signature campaign
  • January 14, 2005 – Sojourners joins in the New York Times ad “The Tent of Abraham, Hagar, and Sarah: A Call for Peacemaking.”
  • March 19-20, 2005 – 800 Sojourners-organized Vigils in 50 States for vets
  • September 24, 2005 – Sojourners participates in D.C. anti-war protest organized by ANSWER Coalition and United for Peace and Justice.
  • November 2005 – Rose and Cindy at trial
  • December 2, 2005 – Sojourners calls for release of Christian Peacemaker Team members kidnapped in Iraq.
  • March 16, 2007 – Christian Peace Witness service at National Cathedral, march on to White House
