Anglican Anguish

by Rose Marie Berger, Brian Bolton | January 2004

Leaders of the world’s 77 million Anglicans met in London

Leaders of the world’s 77 million Anglicans met in London for two days in October to address disagreements over the election of a gay bishop in New Hampshire and the recognition of same-sex blessings in Canada. "We must make clear that these recent actions do not express the mind of our Communion as a whole," said the primates’ statement, "and these decisions jeopardize our sacramental fellowship with each other."

The bishops called on the provinces in question to "make adequate provision for episcopal oversight of dissenting minorities within their own area of pastoral care in consultation with the Archbishop of Canterbury." They also reaffirmed the denomination’s need "to listen to the experience of homosexual persons, and to assure them that they are loved by God and that all baptized, believing, and faithful persons, regardless of sexual orientation, are full members of the Body of Christ."

Sojourners Comment Community Covenant

I will express myself with civility, courtesy, and respect for every member of the Sojourners online community, especially toward those with whom I disagree, even if I feel disrespected by them. (Romans 12:17-21)

I will express my disagreements with other community members' ideas without insulting, mocking, or slandering them personally. (Matthew 5:22)

I will not exaggerate others' beliefs nor make unfounded prejudicial assumptions based on labels, categories, or stereotypes. I will always extend the benefit of the doubt. (Ephesians 4:29)

I will hold others accountable by clicking "report" on comments that violate these principles, based not on what ideas are expressed but on how they're expressed. (2 Thessalonians 3:13-15)

I understand that comments reported as abusive are reviewed by Sojourners staff and are subject to removal. Repeat offenders will be blocked from making further comments. (Proverbs 18:7)
