No Just War

David Cortright's "Finding the Way Out" (March 2011), about why it's time to end the war in Afghanistan, was excellent and timely with one exception -- his appeal to the just war doctrine. A just war is an oxymoron! No war is morally justifiable, regardless of the criteria applied. We should bury this discredited doctrine. Peacemakers should devote all of their energies toward insisting upon nonviolent alternatives in resolving international conflicts.
