I had the blues when I took off my shoes,
Then I put them back on.
Then I went in the house and saw a
mouse.
Then I ran in the house.
Then I got so mad that I called my
mother and said I was scared.
She gave me some water and gave me a
hug. And that's the end of my down old
blues.
Carlton Shell was an intelligent 9 year-old student attending Harrison Elementary School when this poem appeared.
This appears in the July 1993 issue of Sojourners
